Silica is a naturally occurring mineral, which can form crystalline silica in the correct molecular formation. Crystalline silica is a known human carcinogen; over 1.5 million workers in the United States run the risk of exposure in their workplace. The three main forms of silica are quartz, cristobalite and tridymite, all three of which we test for at Lab/Cor, Inc. Silica particles become airborne when workers cut, chip, sandblast, grind or drill materials that contain silica. These airborne particles can become imbedded in the lungs and over time cause silicosis or even lung cancer. Both air and bulk samples are analyzed at Lab/Cor, Inc. by X-ray Diffraction to determine the concentration of crystalline silica in submitted samples.
